What Kind of Ballet Technique Do Young Dancers Learn at Petite Ballet?

Can toddlers and preschoolers really learn ballet technique? Absolutely, but how ballet is taught to a 3-year-old should look very different from how it is taught to an older dancer.

From their very first class at Petite Ballet, students begin learning valuable, age-appropriate dance skills. Our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to meet young dancers where they are cognitively, physically, socially, and emotionally.

Real Ballet Skills, Taught for Little Dancers

Every Petite Ballet class includes dedicated time for developing proper technique. For our youngest students, ballet concepts are introduced through creative movement, imagery, music, and play.

As dancers grow, the technical portion of class grows with them.

Children are gradually introduced to ballet terminology, posture, balance, coordination, musicality, spatial awareness, body control, direction following, and foundational ballet movements.

The goal is to build strong foundations without taking away the magic that makes young children fall in love with dance.

A Ballet Curriculum That Grows With Your Child

Petite Ballet has developed specific syllabi with goals for each age and class level.

This is especially important in early childhood because children develop tremendously between the toddler, preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary years.

Our age-specific approach means returning dancers continue building on what they have already learned rather than simply repeating the same class year after year. It also allows new dancers to enter the Petite Ballet program and begin learning alongside their peers.

By the time students reach our Petite Academy program for kindergarten through 2nd grade, they are ready for more structured classical ballet exercises while still enjoying the creative, imaginative approach that makes Petite Ballet distinctive.

Technique Without the Pressure

While we value proper ballet foundations, our most important goal is that young children experience dance as something magical, not stressful.

There is plenty of time for perfection later.

At Petite Ballet, these early years are about building confidence, curiosity, body awareness, musicality, coordination, and a genuine love of movement. We want children to feel proud of what their bodies can do and excited about what they’ll learn next.

That combination of thoughtful ballet instruction and childhood imagination is at the heart of Petite Ballet.
